What is Extrication
What is a Vehicle Extrication Rescue Team? Simply, the team is a group of trained individuals who will work together toperform a task, in our case, the task can be a number of different situations.| Extrication is the art of
removing an entrapment (usually wreckage) from around a victim and
removing the victim
from
the entrapment. Once the victim is removed from the entrapment, he or
she
becomes a patient under the protective care of emergency medical
personnel.
All efforts to free the victim from further entrapment must focus on
preventing
further injury to the victim due to careless extrication maneuvers.
Therefore,
the art of extrication requires the ability to apply extreme force to
manipulate
debris, at the same time stabilizing the victim as gently as possible.
Anyone can clear wreckage and debris from a site, but it takes a
PROPERLY
trained rescuer to stabilize, free, and remove a patient from an
entrapment
without causing further harm. Extrication situations are wide ranging. They may involve anything from entrapment caused by natural disasters to vehicular collisions. They may be further complicated by fire, hazardous materials, unstable structures, or any number of other hazard. |
|
Personnel who perform extrications must
possess a great deal of knowledge and training |
Training Pictures |. The rescuer must be familiar not only
with
extrication procedures, but also should have a working knowledge of
forcible
entry tools, first aid, and rescue procedures. The rescuer should
possess
an understanding of mechanical maneuvering and mechanical tool
practices.
Although not everybody on our team EMT or first responder, the ability
to know first aid and or other areas of training, (hazardous materials,
firefighting,
etc...) will come with in house training. You will learn the areas that
are needed for extrication purposes. The incident commander or team
leader
plays a big role in the direction of rescue personnel. That person is
the
only person that needs to be trained in all levels of the situation
whether
that means medical, fire, or hazardous materials.
The Vehicle Extrication Rescue Team is being implemented for the
Mountain
Ambulance Service to provide a knowledgeable and trained team that is
ready
and willing to respond to any and all types of rescues, extrications,
and
special situations requiring the tools and or knowledge of the
personnel
on the team. The scope of these training packets and meetings that are
being set up are designed to train the members of the team to the
extent
that each member knows exactly what each other member is doing at a
scene.
For example, if the team leader orders the team to stabilize the
vehicle
at an accident scene, each member will know that they will need
cribbing,
step blocking, possibly an anchor and a come-a-long. The members will
work
as a team cribbing and stabilizing the vehicle to the satisfaction of
the
team leader. The hopes of the Mountain Ambulance Service is to have the
best trained

in
the northern Oconto county area. The reason being is that there isn't
any
ambulance service or fire dept in the area that has an extrication or
rescue
team set up to the extent that our service would like.
